Changes to Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Please see below for important information for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) filers regarding changes to the application process.
The FAFSA Simplification Act represents a significant overhaul of the processes and systems used to award federal student aid, starting with the 2024–25 award year. This includes the FAFSA form, need analysis, and many policies and procedures for schools that participate in federal student aid programs.
The redesigned and streamlined FAFSA form will be available from Dec. 31, 2023, to June 30, 2025, for the 2024-2025 award year. For the 2025-2026 award year, the FAFSA form will be available from October 1, 2024, to June 30, 2026.
Major changes required by the law include the following:
• All contributors need FSA IDs
• Student Aid Index (SAI) replaces the EFC
• Modifications to Family Definitions in FAFSA Formulas
• Expanding Access to Federal Pell Grants
• Streamlining the FAFSA Form
• IRS imports tax information
The new FAFSA will contain significantly fewer questions. Applicants will be able to skip as many as 26 questions on the 2024-25 FAFSA, depending on their circumstances. Some students will only have to answer 18 questions on the new form; the 2023-24 FAFSA included up to 103 questions.
